INTRODUCTION:

“Global warming is too serious for the world any longer to ignore its danger or split into opposing factions on it”.

Tony Blair

Nowadays global warming is considered as a burning problem and it is being a challenge to the entire world and its scientific society. Global warming is a worldwide environmental problem by which there is an abnormal increase to the level of temperature, particularly in a natural environment. Global Warming is the observed and projected increase in the average temperature of earth’s atmosphere and oceans due to greenhouse gas emissions like CFC, CH4, N2O, CO, Hydro carbons on account of human activities. The effects of Green house gas due to increase in Green House Gas warms the planet; decrease in Green House Gas cools the planet. Unfortunately there is a steep increase of the temperature in the last three decades. Global warming is not only affecting the nature, but it affects the life and homes of millions of people.1

The global average temperature near Earth’s surface has risen by 0.74±0.18 C during the last 100 years. The Inter-governmental panel on climate change in its climatic models has projected that global surface temperatures is likely to increase by 1.1 to 6.4C between 1990-21008.since 1870, global sea levels have risen by about 8 inches. According to U.S. global change research program, the temperature in the U.S. has increased by 2 degrees in the last 5o years and precipitation has increased by 5%.by the end of the century, around 150000 people will have died of heat related causes.2

The effect of global warming on the climate of India has led to climate disasters as per some experts. according to surveys, in the year 2007-2008, India ranked the third highest in the world regarding the number of significant disasters, with 18 events in one year, resulting in death of 1103 people due to these catastrophes. in May 2015, India was struck by a severe heat wave .as of 3 June 2015, it has caused the deaths of more than 2500 people in multiple regions. The heat wave occurred during the Indian dry season, which typically blasts from March to July with peak temperature in April and July.3

Human beings have increased the CO2 concentration in the atmosphere by about thirty percent, which is an extremely significant increase, even on inter-glacial timescales. It is believed that human beings are responsible for this because the increase is almost perfectly correlated with increases in fossil fuel combustion, and also due other evidence, such as changes in the ratios of different carbon isotopes in atmospheric CO2 that are consistent with "anthropogenic" (human caused) emissions. Deforestation is responsible for 25% of all carbon emissions entering the atmosphere, by the burning and cutting of about 34 million acres of trees each year.4

NEED FOR STUDY:

The term global warming was probably first used in its modern sense on 8 august 1975 in a science paper by Wally broecker in the journal science called “Are we on the brink of a pronounced global warming”. Global warming is the increase of earth’s average surface temperature due to effect of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide emission from burning fossil fuels or from deforestation, which trap heat that would otherwise escape from earth. This is a type of green house effect.5

Global warming is all about adverse climate change caused by trapping of green house gases (CO2) in the earth atmosphere that affects biodiversity and causes a serious health hazards. Counter measures to facilitate living in hotter temperature like air conditioning and refrigeration will unfortunately consume more electricity from power plants that burn coal, releasing CO2. This will further spike global warming and have a seriously damaging influence on human health.6

Higher temperature over the coming decades are excepted to cause more smoggy days and heat waves, contributing to a greater number of illness and deaths in the united states, according to international climate scientist. Smog can damage lung tissue, increasing respiratory and heart disease and death. Even modest increase in smog can cause asthma in children. Smog related death from climate change is projected to increase by about 4.5 % from the 1990s to 2050s, According studies at Columbia and Johns Hopkins universities. A scientist at Yale University, Michelle Bell, looked at the 50 largest cities in eastern United States and found that the health alert days would go up by 68 percent over the next decades.7

The researcher during his experience has also found that peoples had lack of knowledge regarding global warming and its impact on health so the investigator felt the need to assess the people’s knowledge regarding global warming and to import planned teaching programme to improve people’s knowledge.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM:

“A Study to Assess the Effectiveness of Planned Teaching Programme On Knowledge Regarding Global Warming And Its Impact On Health Among Middle Adults People At Unjha City”.

OBJECTIVES OF STUDY:

1.    To assess the knowledge regarding global warming and its impacts on health among middle adults peoples.

2.    To evaluate the effectiveness of planned teaching programme regarding global warming and its impacts on health.

3.    To find out association between pre test knowledge score with their selected demographic variable

HYPOTHESIS:

·      H1: there will be significant difference between pretest knowledge score and post test knowledge score.

·      H2: there will be a significance association between knowledge score with their selected demographic variable.

METHODOLOGY:

An evaluative research approach was adopted for this study. The Research design selected was Pre experimental one- group pre test post design. The study was conducted in Unjha City, Gujarat. 50 middle adults were selected by using non probability convenient sampling technique. Data collection done after obtaining permission from authority. Self structured knowledge questionnaire was used to collect data regarding Global Warming and Its Impact on Health, Prepared tool was validated by different experts.

RESULTS:

Demographic data was analyzed using frequency and percentage. Frequencies, percentage, mean, median, mean percentage and standard deviation was used to determine the knowledge score. The ‘t’ value was computed to show the effectiveness of teaching programme and chi-square test was done to determine the association between the pretest knowledge of adolescent with selected demographic variables.

Finding related to demographic data:

Highest percentage (50%) adults were in Age group 30-35 yrs, majority (54%) adults were Female, majority (98%) were Hindu, majority (56%) adults were Nuclear family, majority (26%) of adults were secondary education, majority (88%) of adults were married and majority (78%) of adults were belongs to middle class family.

Finding related to pre and post test knowledge score:

Table: 1 reveals that during pre test, middle age peoples had 0 (0%) adequate level of knowledge, had 14 (28%) moderate level of knowledge and 36 (72 %) inadequate of level of knowledge. During post test, middle adult people had 13 (26%) adequate level of knowledge, had 36 (26 %) moderate level of knowledge and had 1 (2%) inadequate level of knowledge. It was inferred from the above table that the planned teaching programme was effective in improving knowledge on global warming and impacts on health among middle adults people in Unjha city.

Finding related to association between pretest knowledge score of adolescent with selected demographic variables:

The findings demonstrated that there was no significant association between pretest knowledge scores with selected demographic variables. It was interpreted that the pretest knowledge score regarding Global Warming and Its Impact on Health among middle adults people were not influenced by the demographic variables.

CONCLUSION:

The study findings concluded that middle adults people had inadequate knowledge regarding vector borne diseases before planned teaching. After planned teaching programme middle adults people have improve the knowledge. The study that concludes that the planned teaching programme is an effective technique in inducing the knowledge level of middle adults people regarding regarding Global Warming and Its Impact on Health.
